BACKGROUND INVOLVEMENT WITH THE TBA
The Tamaskan Breeders Association was established
by several Tamaskan breeders (including Ta-Kari) previously registered with the Tamaskan Dog Register (UK, TDR). The
TBA was initially created in February 2009 to support breeders of the UK Tamaskan Dog. However, in August 2009, the
TBA separated itself completely from the TDR and its associate clubs after uncovering a plethora of unethical activities and
lies, including current usage of F1 and F2 wolfdogs in the Tamaskan breeding despite claiming the Tamaskan has "no wolf
content whatsoever".
Prior to
and throughout its development, members of the TBA began working closely with knowledgeable and experienced professionals
from both the dog and wolf worlds. Specifically, we were involved in the procurement of potential outcross dogs
to increase the Aatu gene pool and move towards achieving the breed standard.
After much searching and discussion, we agreed
to use the name AATU, a male Finnish name said to mean “noble wolf”. We found this appropriate in view of
the Tamaskan Dog’s claimed origins in Finland. Creation of the Aatu breed standard included further enhancements
to correspond with what is found in the natural wolf population. In searching for potential outcrosses, we sought lines
that could help meet our standard and introduce dogs with both good/excellent health and temperament.
As a co-founder of the TBA, I was very excited about the focus on
enhancing and improving the Aatu Tamaskan and its future success. After having uncovered the truth behind our Tamaskan pedigrees,
it was important to work with those committed to presenting honest and accurate information regarding our dogs and our goals.
I am grateful that I was able to do the hundreds of hours or research that I did, as all those that come to us will receive
in-depth information regarding our pedigrees and any health issues found to date within the breed and/or our lines.
[I've always posted information publicly for all to see.]
However, progress over the last 2 1/2 years has
been slow at best. With limited breeding dogs and outcross lines (as well as potential breeders), it has become clear that
(while already recognized) this venture will take many many years to get anywhere near off the ground.
When
I got involved with this breed, it was never to own a bunch of dogs and just breed for the heck of it. Instead it was
to be able to provide wolf look-alike companion dogs in the hopes that it would encourage others to opt for the look
and stop breeding wolves and wolfdogs. (A lofty goal, I know.)
I will never breed just to breed or take on
too much so that my dogs do not receive the individual attention they deserve. I mentioned months back to other TBA
steering committee members that without the numbers, and with continued delays in necessary increases, my time with
the TBA would be short-lived. Therefore, I have decided to focus on the 'quality few' for the time that I choose
to remain as a breeder and have resigned from the TBA. (For all intents, neither the TBA nor TDR are officially recognized
organizations, and 'registration' with either organization is more so for internal record-keeping purposes and potential
future use should either breed become officially recognized.) In sum, my goals have not changed... just the means and
time frame within which to pursue and achieve them.
In short, my goal remains to provide high quality wolf look-alike
companion dogs, with full disclosure provided to all who come to us.
To those that have been with me for some time:
Thank you for your support and encouragement throughout my time involved with the Tamaskan breed. For those who are
just finding us... welcome to Ta-Kari Tamaskans... My pack and I look forward to getting to know you better and sharing with
you the wonderful experience of this breed!
