Important: Pending Legislation

Certain states and organizations are trying to implement legislation that will affect not only the breeding of dogs but the ownership of any domestic dog that resembles a wolf in any way.

DOG BREEDING

For those who are not aware, the past year has brought much controversy and attention to the breeding of dogs.  The HSUS (Humane Society of the United States) is seeking to pass legislation requiring the  the mandatory neuter of dogs, leading eventually to the complete ban of dog breeding.

While I am completely in support of the closing down of all puppy mills and large commercial breeding facilities, I do oppose the complete ban of dog breeding and the affect it will have on responsible breeders.

Be aware that the HSUS is not your local Humane Society but an arm of PETA.  [See 7 Things You Should Know About HSUS.] There has also been a tremendous amount of controversy regarding the HSUS as to their use of funds collected for the supposed support and assistance that they  claim to provide to animal welfare and rescue agencies.  [Despite the millions of dollars it collects, the money does not go to the appropriate entities.]

WOLF LOOK-ALIKES

Another issue at hand in some states is that of the carte blanche confiscation of domestic dogs that in any way resemble a wolf.  This would give appointees the authority to seize ANY dog (including northern breeds and mixed breeds) whether it has wolf heritage or not (law enforcement ‘officials’ will be able to seize ANY WOLFY-LOOKING canid…including Alaskan Malamutes, Samoyeds, German Shepherds, Huskies, Akitas, Elkhounds, etc.  No special training of these persons will be required…if it looks wolfy, then it is wolfy  in their book).  Your pedigree paperwork to prove that dog is NOT a wolf will be of no consequence.  Specifically, a few months ago, California had a hearing on this issue.  While the matter was stayed, it is not a moot issue and will raise its ugly head again in the near future.

I do believe there should be some laws and regulations on breeders (depending on the size and number of breeding dogs), and even licensing or limiting the number of breeding dogs where necessary.  But, this cannot be a blanket issue that would affect even the “hobby breeder” that has one breeding pair or a litter here and there and breeds for the right reasons (improvement on the breed).

Advocate this:  BAN THE DEEDS, NOT THE BREEDS!

Please support the opposition to these kinds of laws that will infringe on your right to adopt the breed of dog you want for your family.  There are responsible breeders that should not be affected and shut down because of the acts of the irresponsible ones.  Oppose puppy mills … support responsibility.
