4/19/10 - My heart hurts today, and
the tears flow for the loss of Takeia's brother ... A beautiful specimen with a wonderful spirit.
Cody was born of the first Tamaskan litter in the US and is
littermate to Takeia. He was called Smokey Joe by the breeder, and registered as J&J Moonshadow. His owners, Gina
and Matt, called him Dakota - Cody for short. He was a wonderful example of the breed in temperament and looks. He had
beautiful, piercing yellow eyes, and was complimented everywhere he went.
I remember Cody as just a little pup of 7 weeks old. He was precious, to say the least. He was actually
my choice of the males, although because of his markings as a pup, he was not recommended for breeding. But, how beautiful
he turned out!!!
Gina and Matt adopted Cody on October 15, 2007 at four months
of age. I remember my first communications with Gina ... she was sooooooooo excited and in love with her new boy.
And that excitement is what bonded Gina and I.
On May 13, 2008, I received an email from Gina telling of the grim prognosis for Cody, as he had been shown to have
abnormal kidney function (later re-diagnosed as Renal Dysplasia). Gina and Matt worked non-stop to find information
and courses of treatment that could be used to help their boy, if not permanently than at least for as long as possible.
How excited we all were when Cody reached his second birthday,
surviving the odds given him by the vets. In fact, Gina and Matt posted a video blog on You Tube and article was written
about Cody, the Lovable Tamaskan (see below).
April 2010 has certainly been a roller coaster of ups and downs for Gina and Matt. They celebrated the birth
of their first child, a beautiful little girl they call Reese. But, sadly, just a few days later, they mourn the loss
of their beloved Cody. Sadly, Cody finally succumbed to his illness on 4/18/10. I believe Cody held on for Gina
and Matt until Reese was born so that they would not be as lonely after his departure. Who knows, maybe a little bit
of Cody is in Reese.
There are no words that can express the
sorrow felt from the loss of Cody. He will be sorely missed but remembered with much fondness by all who knew him!
